About second-brain-lint

A health-check routine for a personal wiki or second brain, run when a user asks to audit, lint, health-check, or find problems in their notes. It performs a fixed set of checks across the wiki and then presents a consolidated, actionable report. It is allowed to use Bash, Read, Write, Edit, Glob, and Grep, and it operates over a conventional wiki layout with sources, entities, concepts, and synthesis folders plus an index.

Eight checks are run. It scans every page for [[wikilink]] references and reports broken links whose target pages do not exist; finds orphan pages that no other page links to; detects contradictions where two pages make opposing claims about the same topic or an entity conflicts with a source summary; flags stale claims where a concept cites only old sources though newer ones exist; identifies missing pages that wikilinks point to but that have not been created; surfaces missing cross-references between pages that discuss the same topics without linking each other; verifies index consistency so every page has a correct index entry and no entry points to a deleted page; and suggests data gaps such as frequently mentioned but shallow topics, questions the wiki answers poorly, and areas a web search could fill.

Findings are grouped by severity: Errors that must be fixed (broken links, contradictions, index entries pointing to missing pages), Warnings that should be fixed (orphans, stale claims, missing pages for referenced topics), and Info items that are nice to fix (potential cross-references, data gaps, index polish). Each finding states what the issue is, where it lives (file and line), and how to fix it. After reporting, it offers to apply fixes, logs the lint pass to wiki/log.md with counts of errors, warnings, info items, and fixes applied, and recommends a cadence: after every ten ingests, monthly at minimum, and before major queries. It is part of a small family alongside second-brain-ingest and second-brain-query.

FAQ

What issues does the lint check for?

Broken wikilinks, orphan pages, contradictions, stale claims, missing pages, missing cross-references, index inconsistencies, and data gaps.

How are the findings organized?

By severity, Errors (must fix), Warnings (should fix), and Info (nice to fix), with each finding describing what the issue is, where it is (file and line), and how to fix it.

Does it fix problems automatically?

Not without asking. It presents the report, then asks whether you want it to fix any items, and applies fixes only if you agree, reporting what changed.

How often should I run it?

After every ten ingests to catch cross-reference gaps while fresh, monthly at minimum to catch stale claims and orphans, and before major queries so the wiki is healthy before you rely on it.

Does it keep a record of audits?

Yes, it appends a dated entry to wiki/log.md noting how many errors, warnings, and info items were found and which fixes were applied.
