About msw-planning
msw-planning is a game-planning mode for MapleStory Worlds (MSW), covering both starting a brand-new game from scratch and continuing or resuming an in-progress prototype. It solves the failure mode of jumping straight into implementation without a plan: instead of coding blindly, it turns a vague "I want to make a game like this" idea into a concrete answer to what to build and how to build it in MSW, producing an implementation-ready Game Design Document (GDD) and roadmap in markdown.
The skill works by narrowing the idea through a single batched round of guided questions, grounding it in the MSW genre catalog (3 map types, roughly 180 core mechanic tags, and per-genre Low/Medium/High build-effort hints), running one direction check, and then dropping the result into a fixed GDD template. It right-sizes ambitious ideas down to a small playable MVP core and pushes everything else to a standing milestone roadmap. It also guides the phased build afterward with detailed Phase plans, progress tracking via defined task states, and disciplined plan revisions, keeping documents trustworthy across sessions where chat context does not carry over. It explicitly does not write code; implementation is handed off to other MSW skills.
It targets MSW creators at any experience level, from people who do not know game design and can simply follow the questions, to experienced designers who want decisions documented quickly. Typical use cases include scoping an MVP, deciding what game to make, resuming a paused project ("where were we?", "what should I work on next?"), and managing a multi-milestone build across its GDD, roadmap, and phase plans.
FAQ
Does this skill write the actual game code?
No. It plans and manages the build (GDD, roadmap, phase plans, progress, revisions) but explicitly leaves implementation of .mlua/.model files to other MSW skills such as msw-general/msw-scripting.
When does it trigger?
By intent, not exact wording. It fires when you want to decide what to build, scope an MVP, or continue/resume a phased build, including cases where a Docs GDD or Phase doc already exists and you say to continue. Variants like 'what now?' or 'where were we?' in any language also trigger it.
Is it only for brand-new games?
No. It handles both starting from scratch and resuming an in-progress prototype, running a dedicated resume flow rather than jumping straight into an existing phase doc.
How does it keep expectations realistic about scope?
It uses per-genre build-effort hints (Low/Medium/High) and sizes the first build by effort plus scope (maps/content), never by a calendar or development-time estimate, since it cannot know your skill level or available hours.
Where do features that don't fit the current milestone go?
Into a standing milestone roadmap (a future-milestone slot or its Backlog), never parked in the GDD. The GDD covers only its own milestone.
