About automate-whatsapp

The automate-whatsapp skill enables developers to build, deploy, and manage WhatsApp automation workflows using the Kapso platform. It provides comprehensive tooling for creating event-driven WhatsApp integrations, from configuring message triggers to deploying custom functions. This skill solves the challenge of building reliable WhatsApp automations by providing both local development workflows and direct API access for workflow management, execution monitoring, and debugging.

Key capabilities include workflow graph editing through local source control or API scripts, WhatsApp trigger management for inbound messages, execution tracking and debugging, and function deployment. The skill supports both TypeScript and JavaScript workflow definitions using the @kapso/workflows SDK, offering a type-safe development experience. It includes utilities for phone number discovery, trigger lifecycle management, context variable inspection, and execution event analysis. Developers can build workflows locally, validate changes before deployment, and push updates through the Kapso CLI.

This skill is designed for developers building customer support automation, conversational commerce, notification systems, and event-driven WhatsApp integrations. It's particularly valuable for teams that need source-controlled workflow definitions, automated testing of workflow logic, and debugging capabilities for production executions. Whether you're building simple auto-responders or complex multi-step conversation flows, this skill provides the infrastructure and tooling needed to develop, test, and maintain WhatsApp automations at scale.

FAQ

What's the recommended way to edit workflows?

The preferred path is using local source control with the Kapso CLI. Install the CLI and @kapso/workflows package, link your project, pull existing workflows, edit workflow.js or workflow.ts files locally, then build and push changes. This provides version control, validation, and dry-run capabilities before deployment.

Do I need the Kapso CLI installed to use this skill?

The CLI is strongly recommended for the best development experience, but there's a fallback path using API environment variables (KAPSO_API_BASE_URL and KAPSO_API_KEY) with Node.js scripts for direct API access. The CLI path offers better workflow management, validation, and phone number discovery.

How do I find the correct phone number ID for triggers?

Use 'kapso whatsapp numbers list' to see all connected numbers, then 'kapso whatsapp numbers resolve' with a display number to get the exact phone_number_id. As a fallback, you can use the list-whatsapp-phone-numbers.js script for direct API access.

What happens if I get a lock_version conflict when updating a workflow?

Lock version conflicts occur when the workflow was modified between your fetch and update. Re-fetch the workflow graph to get the latest lock_version, re-apply your changes to the updated version, then retry the update operation with the new lock_version.

Can I debug failed workflow executions?

Yes, the skill includes comprehensive debugging tools. You can list all executions for a workflow, inspect individual execution details, retrieve specific context variable values, and view execution events to trace the flow and identify where failures occurred.
