About rendercv

This skill helps users create publication-quality CVs and resumes with RenderCV (v2.8), a tool where content is written in YAML and typeset into PDFs via Typst. It solves the problem of getting precise, professional typography and layout control that is hard to achieve in word processors, while keeping content in a versionable, type-safe YAML format that maps directly to Pydantic models.

RenderCV inputs are organized into four sections: cv (content), design (theme, colors, fonts, margins, spacing, layouts), locale (language, month names, translations), and settings (output behavior), with only cv required. The skill documents installation via uv, scaffolding a starter file with rendercv new, rendering with rendercv render (which by default emits PDF, Typst, Markdown, HTML, and PNG), watch mode for auto re-rendering, PNG-only previews, CLI field overrides, and splitting design/locale/settings into reusable separate files. It ships six built-in themes (classic, harvard, engineeringresumes, engineeringclassic, sb2nov, moderncv) and 22 built-in locales with full customization, plus the complete Pydantic schema so every field, type, entry type, social network, and default is explicit and validated.

It targets job seekers, academics, and engineers who want fine-grained, reproducible control over resume design, multi-language output, or maintaining one content file across multiple visual styles. Its strengths are typographic precision, multi-format export, and a documented, validated schema.

FAQ

How do I install and run RenderCV?

Install with uv tool install "rendercv[full]", scaffold a file with rendercv new "John Doe", then render with rendercv render John_Doe_CV.yaml, which by default also generates Typst, Markdown, HTML, and PNG.

What themes and languages are available?

Six built-in themes (classic, harvard, engineeringresumes, engineeringclassic, sb2nov, moderncv) and 22 built-in locales, all of which can be fully customized in YAML, including defining your own language.

What output formats does it produce?

PDF, PNG, HTML, and Markdown (plus Typst). You can restrict output, for example generating only PNG for a quick preview or page-count check.

How is the input structured?

Into four YAML sections: cv (content, the only required one), design, locale, and settings. These can live in one file or be split into separate reusable files, with CLI-loaded files overriding the main YAML.

Can I override fields without editing the YAML?

Yes. Fields can be overridden from the CLI, for example --cv.name "Jane Doe" or --design.theme "moderncv".
