About rhwp-advanced

Diagnostic and inspection tooling for Korean HWP and HWPX documents, built around the upstream rhwp command-line tool, a native Rust binary. It is aimed at structure analysis and render-problem diagnosis: debugging layout, dumping the document intermediate representation (IR), comparing versions, extracting thumbnails, and unlocking read-only distribution documents. It deliberately does not edit documents; editing is delegated to the separate rhwp-edit skill, and conversion to Markdown or JSON to the hwp skill.

Typical triggers include tables or cells that appear clipped, wanting a line-by-line structural diff between two files, SVG renders that look wrong, understanding pagination and which paragraphs span which pages, unlocking a read-only file, or pulling a PrvImage thumbnail. A routing table maps each goal to a subcommand: info for page, font, and section statistics; export-svg (with a debug overlay) and export-pdf for rendering; dump, dump-pages, and dump-records for IR, pagination, and raw records; diag for numbering and outline diagnostics; ir-diff to compare two files; thumbnail for PrvImage extraction; convert to turn a read-only file editable; and gen-table to create a template with an empty table.

Prerequisites are the rhwp binary, installed via cargo install rhwp (Rust 1.75 or newer, which enables the full feature set including PDF export) or a prebuilt release binary, verified with rhwp --help. The workflow checks installation, queries metadata first to learn coordinate ranges, then runs the goal-specific flow, and verifies outputs (SVG files open with visible guides, dumps produce structured stdout, convert clears the read-only flag on re-inspection). Documented failure modes note that PDF export needs the native build, HWPX-to-HWPX saving is disabled upstream, no edit subcommands exist as of v0.7.3, and subcommand flags can drift, so checking --help first is advised.

FAQ

Can this skill edit HWP documents?

No. It is strictly for inspection and diagnosis; editing is handled by the rhwp-edit skill and Markdown/JSON conversion by the hwp skill.

How do I install the rhwp CLI?

Via cargo install rhwp (requires the Rust toolchain, 1.75 or newer, and gives the full native feature set including PDF export) or by downloading a prebuilt release binary. Confirm it is on PATH with rhwp --help.

How do I compare two document versions?

Use the ir-diff subcommand (for example rhwp ir-diff a.hwpx b.hwp), which shows a line-by-line structural delta that is nearly empty when the files are structurally identical.

Why might export-pdf fail?

PDF export is only guaranteed on the native build; it is not available through the @rhwp/core WASM path, so you must run the native cargo-installed binary.

How do I unlock a read-only distribution HWP?

Run rhwp convert locked.hwp unlocked.hwp; re-opening the output with rhwp info should show the read-only flag cleared, after which editing is done with the rhwp-edit skill.
