About second-brain-query
Second Brain Query answers questions by searching and synthesizing knowledge stored in a personal wiki. It is the retrieval half of a second-brain system, meant to be invoked whenever someone asks about their collected knowledge, wants to explore connections between topics, asks what they know about a subject, or wants to search their wiki. It is permitted to use Bash, Read, Write, Edit, Glob, and Grep.
The search strategy is layered to stay efficient as the wiki grows. It begins by reading wiki/index.md and scanning its category sections (Sources, Entities, Concepts, and Synthesis) to identify relevant pages. For larger wikis, beyond roughly 100 pages where scanning the index becomes inefficient, it can use the qmd tool if installed, running a qmd search with a query against the wiki path. It then reads the identified pages and follows [[wikilinks]] to pull in related context, reading enough to answer thoroughly without ingesting the entire wiki. Raw source summaries under wiki/sources/ are consulted only when the wiki pages fall short, and files under raw/ are a last resort.
Answers are shaped to the question: a direct answer with citations for factual questions, a table for comparisons, a linked narrative for exploration, or a bulleted list for catalogs. Every factual claim is cited using [[wikilink]] syntax rather than raw file paths, keeping the knowledge base internally navigable. A distinctive feature is compounding: when an answer produces something worth keeping, such as a comparison, analysis, or new synthesis, the skill offers to save it as a new page in wiki/synthesis/, add an entry to wiki/index.md under Synthesis, and append a dated line to wiki/log.md. It sits in a small family alongside second-brain-ingest, which processes new sources into wiki pages, and second-brain-lint, which health-checks the wiki for issues.
FAQ
When should I use this skill?
When you ask a question about your collected knowledge, want to explore connections between topics, ask what you know about a subject, or want to search your wiki.
How does it search a large wiki efficiently?
It starts from wiki/index.md, and if qmd is installed (checked with command -v qmd) it runs a qmd search against the wiki path, which helps once the wiki grows beyond about 100 pages where scanning the index becomes inefficient.
How does it cite its answers?
Every factual claim links to the wiki page it came from using [[wikilink]] syntax; raw file paths are never used for internal references.
Does it read my raw source files?
Only when needed. It searches wiki pages first, checks summaries in wiki/sources/ if those fall short, and treats files under raw/ as a last resort.
Can it save a good answer back into my wiki?
Yes. If an answer is worth keeping, it offers to create a page in wiki/synthesis/, add an entry to wiki/index.md under Synthesis, and append a dated line to wiki/log.md.
