About web-to-markdown
The web-to-markdown skill converts a given web page URL into a structured Markdown document and saves it locally. It is designed to help users archive, organize, and repurpose web content in a clean, portable format. By transforming full web pages into Markdown, the skill enables easier content management, long-term storage, and reuse in documentation systems, knowledge bases, or AI workflows. It ensures that core content such as titles, body text, links, and images are preserved, while excluding unnecessary elements like navigation menus and advertisements.
The skill provides three conversion modes: a default general mode for clean, human-readable Markdown output; an AI-optimized mode that restructures the content with YAML frontmatter, summaries, key points, and clearly defined sections for efficient AI consumption; and a dual mode that generates both the original-style Markdown and an AI-optimized version simultaneously. It automatically validates URLs, upgrades HTTP to HTTPS when possible, handles redirects, and uses a web fetching mechanism that converts HTML to Markdown with caching support. In AI-optimized mode, it applies strict structural rules to improve clarity, reduce unnecessary verbosity, and enhance machine readability.
This skill is particularly useful for developers, technical writers, researchers, content curators, and AI practitioners who need structured web content for documentation, archival, or contextual AI input. It supports workflows where clean Markdown files are required for version control, knowledge management systems, or AI agent context preparation. The dual mode is especially valuable when both human-readable documentation and machine-optimized context files are needed from the same source.
FAQ
How do I choose between general, AI-optimized, and dual modes?
The mode is automatically selected based on keywords in your request. If you mention AI readability or context usage, AI-optimized mode is used. If you request both versions, dual mode generates two files. Otherwise, general mode is applied by default.
What URL formats are supported?
The URL must start with http:// or https://. HTTP URLs are automatically upgraded to HTTPS when possible. Invalid URLs will result in an error.
What content is excluded from the conversion?
Navigation menus, advertisements, footers, sidebars, and other non-essential layout elements are removed. The focus remains on the main content such as titles, body text, links, images, and code blocks.
What is special about AI-optimized mode?
AI-optimized mode restructures the content with YAML frontmatter, summaries, categorized sections, key insights, and clearly defined headings. This format is designed to improve clarity, reduce unnecessary text, and make the document more efficient for AI agents to process.
Can I choose where the Markdown file is saved?
Yes. You can select the current directory, specify a custom path, or choose to view the converted content without saving it to a file.
