About read-arxiv-paper
The read-arxiv-paper skill automates the process of downloading, extracting, and analyzing academic papers from arXiv. Instead of manually downloading PDFs, this skill fetches the original LaTeX source code of papers, which provides access to the raw content, structure, and references in a machine-readable format. It handles the complete workflow from URL normalization to content extraction, making it easy to integrate academic research into development workflows.
The skill provides comprehensive paper processing capabilities including intelligent source file management, automatic caching to avoid redundant downloads, and recursive reading of multi-file LaTeX projects. It identifies the main entry point file and traverses through all referenced source files to build a complete understanding of the paper's content. The downloaded sources are stored in a structured cache directory for future reference.
This skill is particularly valuable for developers and researchers working on the nanochat project who need to quickly review and apply academic research. It generates context-aware summaries that explicitly connect paper concepts to the nanochat codebase, helping teams understand how research findings can be implemented or what inspirations can be drawn. The markdown summaries are saved locally for easy access and reference during development.
FAQ
What format does the arXiv URL need to be in?
The skill accepts standard arXiv URLs in the format https://www.arxiv.org/abs/{paper_id}. It automatically normalizes these to the source format (https://www.arxiv.org/src/{paper_id}) to download the LaTeX source instead of the PDF.
Where are the downloaded papers stored?
Papers are cached in ~/.cache/nanochat/knowledge/{arxiv_id}.tar.gz to avoid redundant downloads. The extracted contents are unpacked to ~/.cache/nanochat/knowledge/{arxiv_id}. Generated summaries are saved to ./knowledge/summary_{tag}.md in your local working directory.
What if the paper has multiple LaTeX files?
The skill automatically identifies the main entry point file (typically main.tex) and recursively reads through all referenced source files to capture the complete paper content.
How are summaries generated?
Summaries are context-aware and tailored for the nanochat project. The skill reads relevant nanochat code to make explicit connections between the paper's concepts and potential applications or inspirations for the project.
Can I re-download a paper if needed?
If the cached .tar.gz file already exists, the skill skips re-downloading to save time. To force a re-download, delete the cached file from ~/.cache/nanochat/knowledge/{arxiv_id}.tar.gz first.
