About literature-search-arxiv

This skill lets an agent search arXiv for scientific papers, preprints, and publications, extract structured metadata and abstracts, and download full-text PDFs, HTML versions, or LaTeX source archives to a local workspace. It solves the recurring research task of finding and retrieving literature, whether by keyword query or by specific arXiv ID, in a way that respects arXiv's usage policies.

The skill provides three utility scripts run via uv: search_arxiv.py returns a clean JSON array of matching papers (id, title, summary, published date, authors, pdf_url, primary_category, doi, journal_ref, comment) with support for pagination, sorting, and an advanced query syntax (field prefixes, boolean operators, grouping, phrases, and date filtering documented in a reference file); download_paper.py fetches a paper as PDF or HTML; and download_paper_source.py fetches the LaTeX source tarball. The documentation emphasizes responsible use, requiring adherence to arXiv Terms of Use, a maximum of one request every three seconds handled automatically by the scripts, a user notification and license file the first time it runs, and attribution of paper URLs in any output.

It is aimed at researchers, scientists, and anyone doing literature review or citation work. Notably, the skill is security-conscious in its own guidance: it warns against overwriting existing files, insists that downloaded source archives never be extracted directly into the working directory, and instructs safe extraction into a dedicated new directory to avoid clutter and archive-related risks.

FAQ

What are the prerequisites?

It requires uv to be installed and on PATH (via the referenced uv skill). On first use, if a license notification file does not exist, the skill notifies you to check arXiv's API terms and the license of retrieved papers, then records that notification.

How do I search versus fetch a specific paper?

Use search_arxiv.py with --query for keyword or fielded searches (e.g. au:einstein AND ti:relativity), or with --id_list to fetch specific arXiv IDs directly. Advanced syntax supports title/author/abstract prefixes, AND/OR/ANDNOT, parentheses, quoted phrases, and submitted-date ranges.

What rate limits and usage terms apply?

You must respect arXiv's Terms of Use, including a maximum of one request every three seconds. The provided scripts handle rate limiting automatically, and the skill directs you to always use them rather than writing your own requests.

Are there limitations on downloads?

HTML format is only available for newer papers, and LaTeX source is not available for all papers. The skill also warns that requesting 100+ search results can produce very large JSON, so it recommends limiting results and redirecting output to a file.

How does it handle downloaded source archives safely?

It cautions against extracting tarballs directly into your working directory and requires extracting into a dedicated new directory instead, to avoid overwriting files and to guard against unexpected archive contents.
