About competitor-analysis
The competitor-analysis skill provides comprehensive competitive intelligence for mobile apps on the App Store. It helps you understand how your competitors position themselves, what keywords they target, and what strategies they use to attract users. By analyzing metadata, creative assets, ratings, and growth signals, this skill identifies actionable opportunities to outperform competing apps in your category.
This skill performs multi-dimensional analysis across six key areas: metadata comparison (titles, subtitles, descriptions), keyword gap identification (finding keywords competitors rank for that you don't), creative strategy evaluation (screenshots, videos, icons), ratings and reviews analysis, growth signals tracking (chart positions, update frequency, monetization), and competitive positioning assessment. It supports analyzing 3-5 competitors at once, mixing direct competitors with aspirational and emerging players.
Ideal for app developers, ASO specialists, product managers, and marketing teams who need to make data-driven decisions about app store optimization. Whether you're launching a new app, improving your current ASO strategy, or trying to understand why competitors outrank you for specific keywords, this skill provides structured frameworks and comparison tables to guide your competitive strategy.
FAQ
What information do I need to start a competitor analysis?
You need your App ID, competitor App IDs (or the skill can help identify them), and your target country (defaults to US). If you have an app-marketing-context.md file, it will use known competitors from there. You can also specify what aspect you want to analyze: keyword gaps, creative strategy, positioning, or all areas.
How many competitors should I analyze at once?
The recommended approach is to analyze 3-5 competitors: 2 direct competitors (similar size and features), 1-2 aspirational competitors (larger, more established apps you want to emulate), and 1 emerging competitor (newer apps gaining traction in your space).
What if I don't know who my competitors are?
The skill helps identify competitors through multiple methods: examining category charts for top apps, finding apps with keyword overlap, analyzing Apple's 'You Might Also Like' suggestions, and asking what users would use if your app didn't exist. It guides you through the identification process before starting the analysis.
What specific aspects of competitors does this analyze?
The analysis covers six dimensions: metadata (titles, subtitles, character usage, descriptions), keyword gaps (keywords they rank for that you don't), creative strategy (screenshots, videos, icons), ratings and reviews (sentiment, response patterns), growth signals (chart positions, downloads, update frequency), and monetization models (pricing, subscriptions, in-app purchases).
When should I use this skill versus the keyword-research skill?
Use competitor-analysis when you want to understand overall competitive positioning, identify strategic opportunities, or analyze what competitors are doing across multiple dimensions. Use keyword-research when you specifically need to find and evaluate individual keywords for targeting, regardless of competitor activity.
