About prioritization-advisor
Prioritization Advisor is an interactive skill that helps product managers choose the right prioritization framework for their specific situation rather than defaulting to whatever is fashionable. It is explicitly a decision guide, not a scoring calculator: instead of computing a ranked backlog, it recommends which framework to adopt and how to implement it, given the team's stage, context, and stakeholder dynamics. The goal is to avoid two common failure modes: framework whiplash from switching approaches constantly, and applying the wrong framework, such as using RICE for strategic bets or ICE where data-driven rigor is needed.
The skill surveys a broad landscape of options and explains when each fits. Scoring frameworks include RICE, ICE, Value vs. Effort, and Weighted Scoring; strategic frameworks include the Kano model, Opportunity Scoring, Buy-a-Feature, and MoSCoW; and contextual frameworks include Cost of Delay, Impact Mapping, and Story Mapping. To arrive at a recommendation it asks up to four adaptive questions (product stage, team and stakeholder context, the primary prioritization challenge, and data availability), each offering three to four enumerated options, and it treats any context provided with the invocation as answers already given so it can skip questions it already has answers for. It uses a companion workshop-facilitation protocol for the interaction style, including one-question turns and numbered options.
Use it when choosing a framework for the first time, when the current one is not working, when aligning stakeholders on a prioritization process, or when onboarding new PMs to team practices. It is deliberately not meant for situations where a working framework already exists, for one-off decisions, or as a substitute for strategic vision, since frameworks execute strategy but do not create it. The output is a recommended framework with implementation guidance tailored to the answers given.
FAQ
What does this skill actually produce?
A recommended prioritization framework matched to your context, plus implementation guidance. It is a decision guide, not a scoring calculator, so it does not rank your backlog for you.
Which frameworks can it recommend?
Scoring frameworks (RICE, ICE, Value vs. Effort, Weighted Scoring), strategic frameworks (Kano, Opportunity Scoring, Buy-a-Feature, MoSCoW), and contextual frameworks (Cost of Delay, Impact Mapping, Story Mapping).
How does it decide?
It asks up to four adaptive questions about product stage, team and stakeholder context, your primary prioritization challenge, and data availability, each with three to four enumerated options.
Can I provide my context up front?
Yes. Anything supplied with the invocation (text after the skill name or a pasted context dump) counts as answers already given, so it uses that and skips questions it already covers.
When should I not use it?
When you already have a prioritization framework that works, for one-off decisions rather than recurring prioritization, or as a substitute for strategic vision.
