About customer-journey-mapping-workshop
Customer Journey Mapping Workshop is an interactive facilitation skill that guides product managers through building a customer journey map. It solves a common discovery problem: teams jump to feature lists and assumed solutions instead of understanding where the real experience breaks down. By asking adaptive questions about the actor, scenario, journey phases, actions, emotions, and opportunities, it produces a shared, human-centered mental model of the end-to-end experience rather than a roadmap.
The skill is built around the NNGroup journey-mapping framework and its five components — actor, scenario and expectations, journey phases, actions/mindsets/emotions, and opportunities. It runs as a one-question-at-a-time workshop of up to five adaptive questions, each offering three to four enumerated options, and defers its interaction protocol to a companion workshop-facilitation skill for session heads-up, entry modes (guided, context dump, best guess), progress labels, interruption handling, and numbered recommendations. It accepts context supplied with the invocation (a persona and scenario, pasted research, or an ARGUMENTS line) and skips whatever that already covers. It includes a structured journey-map layout, guidance on why the technique works, and explicit anti-patterns clarifying that a journey map is not a service blueprint, user story map, or experience map, plus when to use it and when not to.
It targets product managers, UX researchers, and cross-functional teams running customer discovery — mapping onboarding, trial-to-first-value, or support journeys — who want to surface pain points, align on the customer's perspective, and prioritize which problems to solve first.
FAQ
What does the workshop produce?
A customer journey map organized by the NNGroup five components: actor (persona), scenario and expectations, journey phases, actions/mindsets/emotions, and opportunities — visualizing the end-to-end experience and highlighting where it breaks down.
How does the interaction work?
It asks up to five adaptive questions, one at a time, offering three to four enumerated options at each step. It uses the companion workshop-facilitation skill as its default interaction protocol for entry modes, progress labels, and pause/resume behavior.
Do I need to prepare anything before starting?
It works best with a persona and a scenario or goal, plus any research artifacts (interviews, support tickets, churn/exit surveys, analytics). But you can arrive empty-handed — the workshop opens with the actor question and proceeds one step at a time.
When should I not use this skill?
When you already understand the journey deeply, for technical refactoring with no customer-facing journey, or as a substitute for actual user research — maps require research input rather than replacing it. It is also distinct from a service blueprint, user story map, or experience map.
